Alexandria residents have something to look forward to in the near future.

The Kingsley, a new 175-unit apartment community featuring Old Town’s first full service grocery store, broke ground on Wednesday with a ceremony and reception.

The developers of this luxury apartment building, Buchanan Partners and The Pinkard Group, will make public contributions including close to $600,000 for a new bus stop, improvements to a local park, and an array of sidewalk and streetscape improvements. There will also be a Capital BikeShare station, and a Harris Teeter.

The Kingsley, which is located in close proximity to the Braddock Road metro at 500 Madison St in Alexandria, Va., and across the street from the 100-year-old Royal Restaurant, should be completed by 2014. The rent will be market price, but will include affordable housing apartments inside.

“This is an exciting time for Alexandria residents. The development of this mixed-use property will help to enhance the quality of life in this growing neighborhood by delivering a strategic grocery store, and it will also inspire other projects in the neighborhood to develop,” explained Alexandria Mayor, William D. Euille.

Additionally, the project will create approximately 150 new jobs and generate tax revenue for the City.
