Ridiculous Invention Comes from Super NOVA: Cans of Beer Delivered to Your Hand

A Super NOVA is a person with a unique talent or business that makes them stand out in the crowd of Northern Virginia. Ryan Rusnak of Falls Church is this week’s Super NOVA for being an inventor, more specifically, for his invention of The Beer Cannon.

“I don’t know if I have always been an inventor….I think throughout the years I have just started thinking ‘I can make that!’ more and more,” said Rusnak.

Last August Rusnak started building the infamous Beer Cannon, which shoots anything really. He recently gave a talk at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center and launched 2 cases of Dr. Pepper to the students.

The Beer Cannon was finished on Christmas Eve and Rusnak had no idea it would soon become a YouTube sensation; it currently has almost 1.4 million hits. Rusnak was asked by the Graham Norton Show to ship the mini fridge beer cannon so that Matt LeBlanc could test it out. It cost roughly $5,000 to package and ship the fridge to England (luckily, the show paid for these expenses).

Rusnak’s grandfather once turned a leaf blower into a go-cart, so you could say the mad-scientist, entrepreneurial spirit to invent was in his blood. His apartment is filled with wood blocks, plexi glass, screws, a saw and metal cans.

“His neighbors have to be curious as to what is going on,”said Rusnak’s girlfriend, Kirby Olsten.

Rusnak, who is currently a consultant at Deloitte, will be studying this fall in Carnegie Mellon’s School of Human Computer Interaction. After he created the cannon, he realized his capabilities and is taking requests if you have an idea for invention. You can email your requests to personalbeerrobot@gmail.com.

What’s his latest project? The Dog Feeder. Watch the video to find out more. Look out for more Super NOVAs every Wednesday afternoon going forward. Email escott@wusa9.com if you want to nominate yourself, or someone you know that deserves to be recognized as a Super NOVA.
