How to save your breasts and your wallet by October 2nd!

Insurance companies state that they are willing to pay 100% of a "screening mammogram", but not for the “I think we found something”; what the @#!$ does that mean?  In my case, I felt a lump, and made the mistake of mentioning it to the technician during my mammogram.  Should I have mentioned the lump, or should have I played dumb?  Well, mentioning the lump cost me $600, and that is with my health insurance coverage (part of that was the “you need to come back because I think we found something” factor).  So two mammograms, $600 out of my pocket, two missed days of work, 4 weeks of no good sleep (because I could not get an appointment any earlier), and a potential ulcer from all the stress….it was normal!  Was it worth it?  Could I have done things differently? Well…. 

Get Registered for the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics

The 2010 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics is being held September 18 through September 29. The deadline to register is Wednesday, September 1! To be eligible you must be 50 years old by December 31, 2010 and live in a sponsoring jurisdiction, which include the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William, and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church. $10 includes one event and the following events are open:

Track & field, team line dance, racquetball, ten pin bowling, eight ball pool, Wii bowling, bocce, tennis, table tennis, fencing, golf, shuffleboard, chess, miniature golf, bunco, horseshoes, softball hit & throw, backgammon, scrabble, cribbage, yo-yo tricks, duplicate bridge, swimming, diving, pickleball, men’s basketball,  men’s and women’s free throw basketball

New Membership Director for Vantage Fitness

Jeffrey Garofalo is the newest membership director of Vantage Fitness on 402 W. Broad Street in Falls Church, VA. Garofalo joins Vantage Fitness after working in the health club industry for the past 10 years. He was most recently at the DC area Sport and Health Club, and he has also spent time with the DC area YMCA.

Local Shop Will Aid in a Healthy School Year

“Have Your Cake and Eat it Too” is helping lead the charge to fight childhood obesity. Lowry Martin is the CEO and President of this shop that makes healthy, delicious muffins. These muffins are made with fresh fruits and vegetables and natural ingredients and will be served in local schools in your neighborhood, Falls Church.

Aligned with the Michelle Obama’s initiative “Let’s Move” to raise a healthier generation of kids, Martin’s shop also is making an effort by visiting schools or classrooms. She and her team give an “Hour of Power” which includes a healthy eating discussion, exercise session, healthy word game, and easy quick recipe is prepared before the audience.

Some of Martin’s muffins include “Banana Surpise,” “Berry Very Blueberry,” Squashyalicisous,” and “Oh! That Corn.” These healthy and delicious muffins will be distributed in local Falls Church schools this fall.

Stratford University Brings the Spice

Stratford University in Falls Church, VA continues to hold unique culinary workshops. On August 14, the workshop will be dedicated to “Cooking with Spices from Around the World.” The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Falls Church campus and the cost is $60 per person.

Come learn how to bring your meals to the next level with different spices! The chef will show you how to use birds of paradise, pink peppercorns, lavender, and how to use and create your own spice rubs. Your plain old chicken won’t be so plain anymore.
