Local Family Photographer Refuses to Shoot Families in Matching Outfits

A Super NoVA is a person with a unique talent or business that makes them stand out in the crowd of Northern Virginia. Jennifer Burns is this week’s Super NoVA for her beautiful family and children’s photography.

“I’ve always been obsessed with photos,” said Burns.

Burns, who has a 4.5 year-old, a 3 year-old, and a 10 month old, first started her photography website about 2.5 years ago. Word of mouth has helped spread her business and she has snapped somewhere around 60 different families; she has numerous repeat families.

Taking pictures of children can be quite a feat, so Burns tries to get to know the kids prior to the shoot.

“I always send the mother some questions beforehand so I can relate to the child. I want it to feel more like a play date,” said Burns.

Burns believes that the easiest and most fun age to photograph is 7-9 months old. She is a believer in candid photographs to capture the true personalities of her subjects, instead of posed families in matching outfits.

“I don’t do families in matching outfits. It’s not real,” said Burns.

There is a fashion guide on her site because she finds that sometimes figuring out how to dress each family member is the biggest struggle.
