DC Restaurant Week Hits VA Neighborhoods

Luckily DC Restaurant Week is not limited to the District. DC Summer Restaurant Week starts tonight and runs through Sunday, August 22. Over 200 restaurants are participating, and many of them are in Virginia neighborhoods. Make your reservation today on OpenTable.com and get your taste buds ready for a gourmet, multi-course meal!

This 16th biannual DC Restaurant Week is sponsored by Cadillac and American Express. For all participating restaurants the pricing is set as follows:

Lunch: $20.10 for a three-course fixed-price meal
Dinner: $35.10 for a three-course fixed-price meal
Beverages, gratuity and tax are not included.

Recycling Extravaganza!

The residents of Falls Church are invited out for the city’s semi-annual “Recycling Extravaganza” on  Saturday, September 11. The City of Falls Church Department of Environmental Services and the Falls Church Environmental Services Council want locals to bring their unwanted electronics, clothing, medical supplies, bicycles and more! All of the items brought to the event will be recycled, donated to charity or reused.

The “Recycling Extravaganza” will be held at the Falls Church Property Yard and Recycling Center at 217 Gordon Road in Falls Church, VA. Come anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Book Discussion at Falls Church Public Library

The Mary Riley Styles Public Library in Falls Church, VA holds a free, open book discussion on the first Thursday of every month at 7:30 p.m. On September 2, A History of the World in 6 Glasses by Tom Standage will be discussed.

The discussions are held in the library’s Conference Room on the main floor. Everyone is welcome and light refreshments will be served. The first 18 attendees will receive a copy of the next month’s book!

Senior Center Closure August 30-September 7

The Falls Church Senior Center will be closed the week of August 30. This means that all trips, lunches, and activities will be cancelled as well. The center will reopen on September 7.

In other news, the Senior Center is bringing back the popular Italian Conversation Group! This group will meet weekly on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. in the Senior Center. While Italian fluency is not required, some Italian conversation knowledge is preferred. You can call the center at 703-248-5020 for more information.

100 Needy Students Receive School Supplies Shopping Spree

Early this morning 100 local students in need were given the opportunity to visit a local Target store to buy back-to-school supplies. The Salvation Army and Target teamed up to help these students purchase a variety of supplies for the upcoming school year.

The Salvation Army and Target are helping a total of 12,000 students nationwide with the Target School Spree. Each student that is selected by the Salvation Army gets an $80 Target Giftcard for school supplies.

There were 30 students from DC and Prince Georges County, 30 from Alexandria and Arlington County, 30 from Fairfax and Prince William County, and 10 from Montgomery County.

Self-Defense Classes Available for Local Women

Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D) is a program of self-defense techniques and tactics for women-only that will soon be offered in your neighborhood. The program is open to ages 12 and up and provides the basics of awareness, prevention, risk avoidance, and hands-on training. The program is not Martial Arts; it is a program dedicated to teaching women defensive concepts against assault and provides females the knowledge they need for risk prevention.

This class is free as a public service of the Police Department, however, registration is required. The deadline to register is Friday, August 13th. The classes will be taught by nationally certified R.A.D instructors that are City Police Officers.

The classes will be held at Columbia Baptist Church (103 West Columbia Street) on August 16th, 17th, 19th, and 23rd from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Want to Adopt a Mistreated Cat or Dog This Weekend?

Volunteers from the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation are working to help find new homes for mistreated animals in different locations from Falls Church to Leesburg.

The founder of Log Dog and Cat Rescue, Pam McAlwee, has placed over 15,000 animals with new families since the launch of the organization in 2001. These non-profit group travels by van and continues to host up to 5 pet adoptions every Friday and Saturday morning.

Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation has a staff of 8 full-time employees and relies on another 300 people in volunteer positions who help out at the weekend events by walking, feeding, and taking care of the rescued animals.

Come this weekend, Saturday, August 7th, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to the PETSMART in Seven Corners of Falls Church, VA for the dog and cat adoption. The address is 6100 Arlington Blvd.
