Officer Involved Shooting In Fairfax County

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (WUSA) -- Fairfax County police shot a man Thursday afternoon who led them on a long pursuit after stealing an unmarked police cruiser.

The incident began around 4:30 when an officer was called to check out a suspicious vehicle in the 2900 block of Westcott Street.  When he arrived, he ran the license plate of a Mercedes and discovered it was stolen, according to Police Spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell.

The man, who police have not identified, had some sort of altercation with the officer before running away on foot just as a second officer pulled up for back up assistance.

After the backup officer joined the foot chase, the suspect jumped into one of the officer's unmarked police vehicle and sped off, said Caldwell.  He then returned to switch vehicles, getting back into the Mercedes.

Caldwell said the officers tried to end the chase by throwing up stop sticks at the intersection of Graham St. and Oakland Ave but the suspect drove the vehicle in the direction of one of the officers.  That's when police shot into the Mercedes.

Police say the chase finally ended shortly after when the man calmly pulled his vehicle to a stop on Route 50 near the intersection of Allen St.

Officers tended to his wounds, which are non life-threatening.  He is in the hospital where he faces multiple charges.
